Jennifer Lawrence in “Winter’s Bone”
I have a friend who is a bona fide film critic. Every now and then, on Facebook, he will post his Top 10 list from a random year, and conversation will ensue. His lists always prompts me to dig out my own results from the same year for comparison. Sometimes I’m surprised by how much my opinions have changed over the years; occasionally I’m embarrassed by what I praised or hated.
You know me: I love to talk about movie. So to amuse myself and put together some posts during the busy season, I’m going to post my Top 5 lists, working backward year by year. I’ve already posted my favorites from 2011; you can find the list and mini reviews here. So we’ll start with 2010 through 2008. I’d love to hear your opinions, too.
I’ll post more in the days ahead…
2010’s Top 5
- The King’s Speech
- The Social Network
- Winter’s Bone
- Toy Story 3
- True Grit
What I got wrong: “Exit Through the Gift Shop” and “The Kids are Alright” should have made the cut. The performances in “The King’s Speech” were terrific, but I’m not sure the movie will stick with me for the long haul.
What I hated: Oddly enough, nothing. I seem to have missed all the terrible movie of 2010.

Best Worst Movie
2009’s Top 5
- Star Trek
- Up
- Up in the Air
- Best Worst Movie
- District 9
What I got wrong: “Star Trek” was fun, but I left behind worthier films like “Away We Go”, “In the Loop”, “Drag Me to Hell” and “Zombieland”. Boo, me.
What I hated: “Taken” (just ask my friends) and “Knowing”.
2008’s Top 5
1. The Dark Knight
2. Slumdog Millionaire
3. The Visitor
4. Wendy and Lucy
5. Happy Go Lucky
What I got wrong: No regrets this time.
What I hated: “Mirrors” and “The Happening”, although “The Happening” is so bad that it’s good. You don’t believe me? Just watch this scene for a tiny taste of its tangy awfulness.
Loved Slumdog Millionaire, hated Social Network.

I am someone with a particular skill…it is not acting. I agree with you, I hated Taken and hated seeing a trailer for “Retaken” or Tooken or whatever they are calling it. Want to barf thinking about it. Own The Visitor, how can you not love it?
Loved Cabin the Woods, by the way, even if I am a monster in it.
