Remember when you bought out our Kerasotes Theaters and promised us $5 movies all day Monday thru Thursday and before noon on weekends? Remember your “free refills” siren song? Now I know you were just trying to avoid listening to us complain about the end of the “$5 Buck Club”. Like all administrations when they finally come to power, your promises turned out to be sucker deals. First you changed the policy on refills. Now it’s only free refills on large drinks and popcorn. But if I’ve already mortgaged my home to buy a soda the size of a beer keg, I don’t need a refill. Last night the other shoe dropped when I held out my $10 to buy two tickets to “The King’s Speech” and discovered that the $5 tickets now end at 6:00 p.m. each weeknight. Boo! Evil! Chiselers! And your popcorn is terrible, too! Less than a year after the buyout, and you’ve turned into the typical corporate overlords.
A couple of weeks ago I went to the Chase Park Plaza Cinema to see “True Grit”. Reasonably priced tickets, beautiful theater, live organ music, less expensive snacks, fresh popcorn. I think I may just kiss the Edwardsville Showplace 12 goodbye and start driving a few extra minutes for a better movie-going experience.
To sum up: AMC Theaters, you stink.
But “The King’s Speech” was wonderful.
